"All through social studies class I keep having this weird vision of a police officer showing up at school. I see his visor tipping down as he pushes through the door. He and Mr.Laird huddle together, and their eyes comb me over. The other kids are snickering, laughing, and my neck grows sticky with sweat as they pull me away from everything I know." page 68.
I thought those few sentences were shocking. Nadira is a very quiet girl, and to me, it doesn't really seem like she could even think that. She seems positive sometimes, but at other times, she thinks negative. When she thinks negative thoughts, they seem so strong. As if it may or can happen, but I jsut don't want it to. I wonder: Why doesn't Nadira talk about her feelings with other people? That seems to always help me.

Great sentence you chose. I agree with you, why doesn't she talk to other people about her feelings. I think she doesn't want to because she's afraid she might spill something out maybe, or maybe she isn't aloud because of her current situation (she doesn't want to blow her cover). Although I don't agree with you completely, I mean this might be true but I don't think Nadira is a very quiet girl, she can be outspoken at times but in a rude way. Nice entry Alicia!
ReplyDeleteThank you Dennyce, I agree with you too. Yeah, when she speaks up, she doesn't say very nice things, and she mostly regrets it, but she still likes that feeling. Which I find being a little weird/confusing.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog Alicia. I didn't understand these sentences when I read the book but now that I read it again and read what you wrote I understand it so much better. I think the reason why Nadira does talk to other people (like her best friend Lily) is because her family has told not to talk about her family getting an asylum. I might be wrong but I think that is why. Good job!
ReplyDeleteYes, I also agree with you Becca. But I mean, she can at least talk about her feelings, and not get so deep about her family situation. But I understand that something can accidentally slip out, like Dennyce said.

ReplyDeleteI with both Alicia, Rebecca, and Dennyce. I think that she might not be able to talk about her feeling with others because her parents don't want her to spill their secret, but I still think she would benefit from talking to others without blowing her cover. I also found it interesting when you said she always has strong thoughts. It seems even if the thoughts are positive they are still strong. Remember when she said very assertively that they will get asylum when they got to Canada? That seemed pretty strong as well.
ReplyDeleteYea Sara. Her thoughts always seem to be strong and certain, which scares me a bit because I don't want the police officer to take her and Aisha away. So hopefully that vision of hers doesn't come true.
ReplyDeleteIt must be sad to have to worry about spilling a secret every time you open your mouth.
ReplyDeleteI also hope that nothing horrible happens, but because of what happened lately... I have my doubts.
I agree with Rebecca, it was easier to read that quote after i had read what you said, Alicia. Great points! I think she doesn't want to talk about her feelings because something might slip (like Dennyce said). Sometimes I think, why doesnt she just talk to a therapist, but then i realize...Well duh, because she can't afford it. WHOOPS!

I agree with you on the part when you said that that sentence was shocking. I think a reason why Nadira doesn't share her feelings is because she thinks that she thinks they all love Aisha more than her so they wont understand.
ReplyDeleteHmmm... Good point Alissa. But I disagree a little with you Kat. She won't even talk to her Lily, her best friend, which she can talk to for free, there fore, I don't think she would talk to a therapist, even if she could afford it.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you Megan. I also think that that's were the part comes in where she has to so something, something good. So that her family can be proud of her.
ReplyDelete*do after has to
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Alissa and Becca said about the secrets. When you are hiding an important family secret, you tend to hide it as best as you can, regardless of anything else. That becomes priority above dealing with how you deal with it.
ReplyDeleteShe can't talk about how she feels without revealing everything. Everyone agree on that? ok, good.
ReplyDeleteAlicia, you chose a really good quote to start a discussion. Maybe it's just me, but I don't remember her being particularly positive. I think verb "huddle" in that give a kind of sense like maybe they would be teaming against her...
Alissa thinks something horrible will happen? Possible. Probable. Without another thing happening, I don't think the story could progress further.
Hmmm... Thanks Julia. I never thought of it that way.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Megan and the Saras(and anyone who agreed with them). I feel Nadira wants to spill her secret to someone, because it boiling inside of her but she can't tell anyone outside of her family and she's tired of her family. I don't she would be able to tell even a therapist what's going on and if she could afford it, she probably wouldn't be in as much of a mess as she is.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I agree with your last sentence Claire
ReplyDeletei think that maybe Nadira thinks that she can't talk to anyone, since she is undocumented. In the book she talks about parents warning their children not to become too close with anyone because it can be dangerous or something. I guess she could talk to Aisha, but since they were fighting a lot, perhaps she feels they are not close enough to talk about feelings.
ReplyDeletei think Dennyce is right, that she is afriad that she might spill something she shouldn't.
Excellent point Nickie
ReplyDeleteThe main reason that Nadira has to stay bottled up is because she has to be careful not to talk about how she's illegal, but I think we've all agreed on that. Like Claire said, she could talk to the people in her family, but she's probably getting sick of them. I'm wondering why she doesn't talk to Ali-Uncle about this stuff though? It seems that he would understand what she was going through, and might be able to help her get through. My two cents.
