I thought that this sentence was interesting because it shows that Ma is very reserved. Ma is embarrassed of being seen in public wearing her shalwar kameez, and now she is afraid of answering a question in English. It seems as if she is very afraid of being seen or caught as who she really is. Is it bad to be yourself? Hm.. I look forward to reading the next chapter.
